CEMEX
Global building materials leader in cement, ready-mix concrete, and aggregates
CEMEX is a Mexican multinational building materials company headquartered in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon. Founded in 1906, the company has grown into one of the world's largest producers of cement, ready-mix concrete, and construction aggregates. CEMEX operates in more than 50 countries across four continents, with 64 cement plants, over 1,300 ready-mix concrete facilities, and 246 quarries. The company serves the construction industry through an integrated network of production, distribution, and marine terminals.
CEMEX traces its origins to 1906, when Cementos Hidalgo began operations in Monterrey, Mexico. In 1931, Cementos Hidalgo merged with Cementos Portland Monterrey to form Cementos Mexicanos, the company now known as CEMEX. The company went public on the Mexican stock exchange in 1976 and became Mexico's largest cement producer that same year after acquiring three plants from Cementos Guadalajara. Through the 1980s, further acquisitions elevated CEMEX into the ranks of the ten largest cement companies worldwide. CEMEX launched its international expansion in 1992 with the purchase of Spain's two largest cement companies. Acquisitions in Venezuela (1994), the United States (1994), and Colombia (1996) made CEMEX the third largest cement company globally. The company expanded into Asia, Africa, and the Middle East between 1997 and 2002, with operations in the Philippines, Indonesia, Egypt, Costa Rica, and Thailand. Two landmark deals defined CEMEX's modern scale: the $5.8 billion acquisition of the UK's RMC Group in 2005, which made CEMEX the world leader in ready-mix concrete, and the $14.2 billion acquisition of Australia's Rinker Group in 2007. Today, CEMEX operates 64 cement plants, 1,348 ready-mix concrete facilities, 246 quarries, 269 distribution centers, and 68 marine terminals. The company generates approximately US$13 billion in annual revenue and employs over 41,000 people worldwide. CEMEX is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (CX) and the Mexican Stock Exchange (CEMEX).
